All is Bright Pillow tutorial

A free pillow tutorial for all is bright

Are you tired of your throw pillows and need a quick way to freshen up your home dec? Grab a few sewing supplies, a pillow form, and some fabric and you’ll be on your way to piecing and quilting up this simple pillow cover in no time at all! I made my pillow on the Janome MC9400, but it can easily be adapted to work with any sewing machine and it’s helpful if you’ve got a walking foot (or some sort of dual feed device), but not a deal breaker! This tutorial consists of piecing some flying geese units and doing a little straight line quilting to add a modern punch to your home dec. Check out the supply list below, then click on the PDF instructions “All is Bright” below for the complete project.

Alright, so here’s the breakdown for Week Nine:A quilt along with the week nine block of the month.

  • In Week Eight, we assembled section 5.Β  Here’s the action list to complete for Week Nine!
  • Option A instructions can be found on pages 14-15 and Option B instructions can be found on page 22 in your pattern.
  • You caught me again–I cheated on the photos this week and used the mini (Option B).Β  It’s so much easier to photograph the mini/pillow Option B than it is the large quilt option.
  • Take a look at your coloring sheet and lay out your sections prior to pinning and sewing them together.
  • The whole quilt is basically a large nine patch block.Β  So you’ll sew three rows of three sections together, then sew those rows together to complete the quilt top.
  • Make sure you check that you pin at your seam intersections whenever you have a seam intersection so everything lines up as it should.
  • The only really tricky thing to sewing the top together is keeping your sections straight. I like to label my sections with a little post it note pinned to each one and numbered.Β  It just keeps me from pulling my hair out later when I accidentally grab the wrong one.
  • Double check your layout prior to sewing each section together, and press when you’re done!
  • This week, post a picture of your completed quilt top on Instagram using the #cheekychurndashquiltalong hashtag.Β  Be sure you post your IG picture with the hashtag by midnight on November 16 to qualify for this week’s prize!Β  This is the grand prize for the QAL-free edge to edge longarm quilting, so you’ll really want to make sure you post this week.Β  Refer back to the prize roundup for more details.Β  Even if you missed posting earlier in the quilt along, you can still qualify as long as you post this week with a finished top (must be the 81″ quilt size).A white quilt with blue lettering and a picture of a blue diamond.

Next week, the grand prize winner will be announced and I’ll share some of the finished quilt tops.Β  Thank you so much for joining me for the quilt along, and a huge thank you to all the prize sponsors:

Alright, so here’s the breakdown for Week Eight:A quilt along week eight is here to share.

  • In Week Seven, we assembled sections 2, 4, 6, and 8.Β  Here’s the action list to complete for Week Eight!
  • If you’re on Option A–you’ve got another rest week.Β  Your section 5 is already in one piece.
  • Option B can be found on page 22 in your pattern this week. A blue and white pattern with triangles on it.
  • Obviously, I cheated on the photos for Option B.Β  It’s much easier to photograph the mini/pillow Option B than it is the large quilt option. So let’s pretend these are 9.5″ squares pictured above, instead of 2.5″ squares πŸ˜‰
  • Take a look at your coloring sheet and lay out your pieces prior to pinning and sewing the sections together.
  • Section 5 is basically a large nine patch block. So you’ll sew three rows of three HSTs together, then sew those rows together to complete section 5.
  • Make sure you check that you pin at your seam intersections whenever you have a seam intersection so everything lines up as it should.
  • The only really tricky thing to sewing section 5 together is watching the direction of the diagonal in each HST block.Β  Honestly, if you don’t follow the pattern layout 100%, it will still look great, and no one will be the wiser that you didn’t!
  • Double check your layout prior to sewing each section together, and press when you’re done!
  • This week, post a picture of your completed section 5 on Instagram using the #cheekychurndashquiltalong hashtag.Β  It doesn’t matter if your completed section 5 is for Option A or B, just post a quick pic and be sure you post your IG picture with the hashtag before the start of Week Nine to qualify for this week’s prize! Week Eight’s prize is a Double Sized Batting of your choice (meaning you can pick any of the substrates their batting comes in-cotton, wool, blend, poly, etc.) sponsored by Quilter’s Dream Batting!Β  The amazing folks at Quilter’s Dream are so awesome to be giving this away–I use their batting exclusively in my studio, and it’s absolutely the best. A huge thank you to Quilter’s Dream for sponsoring Week Eight’s prize!A white pillow sitting on top of a bed.

A close up of a quilt with the words " a little quilt along week four ".

  • In Week Three, we sewed all the half square triangles for either Option A or Option B. Then we pressed all of our HSTs. Here’s the action list to complete for Week Four!
  • Week Four is pretty easy. Grab your rotary cutter and a quilting ruler and slide your HSTs over to a cutting mat.
    • For the 81″ square quilt size–Option A and Option B, you’ll square up all your HSTs to measure 9.5″ square.
    • For the mini or pillow size, you’ll square up all your HSTs to measure 2.5″.
  • To do this, you’ll need to make sure the diagonal of your HST is exactly centered within the square measurement. Then trim off any excess as needed.A purple and blue quilt on the floor
  • Check out a quick video tutorial of how to line up your ruler when trimming your HSTs.
  • That’s it! It is a little labor intensive, but it’s worth it to go back and check that all your HST blocks measure correctly before we start putting this quilt together.
  • This week, post a picture of your stacks of trimmed and squared up HST blocks (and trimmings/rotary cutter if you have them!) on Instagram using the #cheekychurndashquiltalong hashtag. Alright, so here’s the breakdown for Week Three:

A close up of a quilt with the words " a little quilt along week three ".

  • In Week Two, you should have decided on which Option of the Cheeky Churn Dash you’re making–Option A or Option B. You also should have kind of looked over the Accordion Sewn HSTâ„¢ Method and decided if you’ll be using that method of piecing your HSTs or the standard piecing method outlined on pages 6-7 of your pattern. If you chose the method outlined in pages 6-7, you starched your fabric already. So here’s the action list to complete for Week Three!
  • For Option AA picture of the instructions for making a quilt.
    • If using the Accordion Sewn HSTâ„¢ Method, draw a diagonal line from one corner to the other on the wrong side of each square designated for half-square triangles.
    • If using the standard method, follow the instructions outlined in pages 6-7 to make the HST blocks.
      • Check out the video for the Cheeky Churn Dash.
      • Assemble a total of 24 half square triangles made from combining fabrics B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I. Assemble a total of 12 half square triangles made from combining one Fabric A with one fabric B-I. So for Option A you will have 36 HSTs.
  • For Option B
    • If using the Accordion Sewn HSTâ„¢ Method, draw a diagonal line from one corner to the other on the wrong side of each square designated for half-square triangles.
    • If using the standard method, follow the instructions outlined in pages 6-7 to make the HST blocks.
      • Check out the video for the Cheeky Churn Dash.
      • Assemble a total of 33 half square triangles made from combining fabrics B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I. Assemble a total of 12 half square triangles made from combining one Fabric A with one fabric B-I. So for Option A you will have 45 HSTs.
  • For both options-press your HSTs well.
  • This week, post a picture of your stacks of completed HST blocks on Instagram using the #cheekychurndashquiltalong hashtag. Be sure you post your IG picture with the hashtag before the start of Week Four to qualify for this week’s prize!
